Savannah, Georgia, is a city that practically demands you slow down. The coastal humidity, the sprawling canopies of Spanish moss, and the cobblestone streets all whisper a gentle reminder that rushing is a fool’s errand here. At Drives & Detours, we know our community of travelers values independence. You aren’t here to be herded onto a crowded bus, forced to eat a mediocre buffet lunch on a strict schedule, or chase a tour guide's umbrella through a crowded square. You travel to gain a deep, authentic knowledge of a location, exploring on your own time and at your own pace.

That same philosophy should apply to how you eat. Savannah’s food scene has exploded in recent years, blending deep-rooted Southern traditions with innovative, modern culinary techniques. But with popularity comes the inevitable rise of tourist traps—places that rely more on foot traffic than flavor.

We’ve done the heavy lifting to curate a list of five extraordinary, highly-rated spots that showcase the true flavor of Savannah. These are the places where locals celebrate, where chefs push boundaries, and where the ambiance is as memorable as the meal itself. None of these are national chains, and each holds a stellar reputation with the culinary awards and reviews to back it up.

Grab your walking shoes and bring an appetite. Here is our insider guide to eating and drinking your way through Savannah.

1. The Grey

The Vibe: Historic, sophisticated, and deeply Southern.

Why We Love It: It is impossible to talk about Savannah’s modern food renaissance without talking about The Grey. Housed in a breathtakingly restored 1938 Greyhound bus terminal, this establishment is a masterclass in preserving history while creating something entirely new. The Art Deco architecture, complete with the original curved glass and terrazzo floors, sets a stunning stage for a meal you won’t soon forget.

Helmed by the legendary Mashama Bailey—a multi-time James Beard Award winner—The Grey offers a menu that honors its Southern roots while introducing global influences. The kitchen is nimble, utilizing seasonal, locally sourced ingredients that rotate frequently. Whether you are indulging in their famous Duck Pastrami, savoring the Smoked Pork, or simply enjoying perfectly fried chicken alongside delicate hoecakes, every bite is intentional.

Insider Tip: The main dining room often requires booking well in advance. If you prefer to keep your schedule flexible, pop into the Diner Bar located in the front of the building. It offers a more casual, drop-in atmosphere with an equally stellar, albeit smaller, menu and fantastic cocktails.

2. Common Thread

The Vibe: Elegant, intimate, and beautifully curated.

Why We Love It: Located in the vibrant Starland District just outside the main downtown hustle, Common Thread feels less like a traditional restaurant and more like you’ve been invited to a fabulous dinner party at a wealthy friend’s historic mansion. Situated in a stunningly renovated 1897 home on 37th Street, the space features multiple cozy dining rooms, classic fireplaces, and sweeping coastal porches.

The culinary team here focuses heavily on local farming partnerships, meaning the menu is incredibly fresh and constantly evolving. This is where you go for a fine dining feel without any of the stuffy pretension. Expect beautifully plated, complex dishes that blend Southern ingredients with unexpected flavor profiles. Past standouts have included Wreckfish, inventive vegetable courses that treat local produce with the utmost respect, and perfectly executed raw bar offerings.

Insider Tip: Common Thread is renowned for its inventive cocktails and a truly exceptional wine list. If the weather is pleasant, request a table on the upstairs porch to enjoy the evening breeze alongside your meal.

3. Brochu's Family Tradition

The Vibe: Laid-back, unpretentious, and aggressively delicious.

Why We Love It: If you think it’s just fried chicken, Brochu's Family Tradition is here to prove you completely wrong. Also nestled in the trendy Starland District, this spot is the brainchild of Chef Andrew Brochu, who has managed to create a space that feels like a classic coastal crab shack mixed with a top-tier culinary destination.

The undisputed star of the show here is the chicken, and they utilize every single part of the bird. If you are traveling with a companion or a small group, you must order the Whole Chicken platter. It is a revelation: flawlessly crispy fried thighs, perfectly charred and marinated breasts, house-made chicken salad from the legs, and a rich gravy made from the wings, all served with dirty rice and buttery biscuits. It’s an interactive, messy, and joyful eating experience.

Beyond the poultry, their oyster selection is fantastic, and the Shrimp Caesar served on brioche is quickly becoming the stuff of local legend. It is fun, it is loud, and it is easily one of the coolest places to hang out in the city.

Insider Tip: Snagging a table inside typically requires a reservation, but if you are playing it by ear, grab a spot on their patio where you can order directly from a walk-up window. Or, swing by the bar on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 to 6:00 PM for Sour Hours—an incredibly fun, 1980s-themed happy hour.

4. Lone Wolf Lounge

The Vibe: A retro, tiki-inspired neighborhood dive (with world-class drinks).

Why We Love It: We promised to keep this list focused, so we are only including one dedicated bar—and Lone Wolf Lounge is the only one you need. Don't let the wood-paneled walls, vintage neon signs, and checkered floors fool you; this is not your average dive bar. The Lone Wolf Lounge was recently named a James Beard Award semifinalist for its Outstanding Bar Program.

This is where the locals go when they clock out. The bartenders are incredibly knowledgeable, whipping up complex, tiki-leaning craft cocktails alongside classic house staples. Yet, despite the national accolades, the lounge refuses to take itself too seriously. You can still grab a cheap can of Guinness, listen to the vinyl spinning, and maybe even catch a karaoke night. It is the ultimate hidden gem where you can soak in Savannah's creative buzz without battling a crowd of tourists.

Insider Tip: Keep your eyes peeled for an unmarked door on Lincoln Street—it's very easy to walk right past it if you aren't paying attention! Also, if you happen to be traveling with a four-legged friend, you are in luck. The lounge is extremely laid-back and actually welcomes dogs inside.

5. Green Truck Neighborhood Pub

The Vibe: Casual, community-driven, and comforting.

Why We Love It: Sometimes, after a long day of exploring historic monuments and walking for miles, you don’t want a tasting menu. You just want a really, really good burger. For over 15 years, Green Truck Neighborhood Pub has been the undisputed king of Savannah burgers. Located in a repurposed fast-food building complete with an old 1965 Chevy stepside truck parked out front, this place is a local institution.

What sets Green Truck apart is their fierce dedication to quality. They use only grass-fed, hormone-free beef sourced from local farms. But the magic doesn't stop at the patty. Every single condiment—from the tangy, vinegar-forward ketchup to the dill-heavy ranch and the pimento cheese—is made completely from scratch in-house. Pair your burger with their famous hand-cut fries and one of the many American craft beers they have on tap, and you have the perfect casual meal.

Insider Tip: They do not take reservations, so expect a bit of a wait during peak hours. Grab a local craft beer from the bar to sip on while you wait for your table.
